Lenexa History

The Shawnee Indians were the first inhabitants in Lenexa and the surrounding area. The name Lenexa was taken from "Len-AG-See," the princess daughter of Shawnee Indian tribal leader Chief Blackhoof. The Shawnee were a peaceful tribe, friendly to white traders, cartographers and European immigrants making their way west along the Santa Fe Trail and Oregon Trail. Many of these immigrants stayed on and toiled in fertile fields around the area later to become what is now the city of Lenexa.

Octave Chanute founded Lenexa along the remnants of the Sante Fe and Oregon Trails  in the late 1800s as the railroads arrived to the area. The St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad purchased the and founded town site and had it platted in 1869. The city officially was incorporated in 1907.

As Kansas City grew westward, "Retail followed rooftops" and Lenexa became home to a growing number of young families and business people from the expanding city. The city has been making strides ever since.

The Great Lenexa Barbeque Battle started in 1982 with only twelve contestants and twelve judges. On April 27, 1984, Then, Governor John Carlin, declared the contest to be the State of Kansas' Official Championship Barbeque Contest.
